Founded in August 1946, the MIC played a pivotal role in the country’s journey to independence and has been a founding member of Malaysia’s ruling coalition, the Barisan Nasional (formerly known as the Alliance), which governed Malaysia from independence in 1957 until 2018.

Early Beginnings

The MIC was originally formed to support the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. After India gained independence in 1947, the party shifted its focus to the struggle for Malaya’s independence, which was achieved in 1957. From its inception, the MIC positioned itself as the political voice and representative of the Indian community in Malaya, advocating for their rights and welfare in the post-war development of the country.

Political Alliance and Nation Building

In 1954, the MIC joined forces with the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) and the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) to form the National Alliance, Malaysia’s first multi-ethnic political coalition. This alliance later expanded and was renamed Barisan Nasional in 1973, becoming the dominant ruling coalition for decades. Through this partnership, the MIC has contributed significantly to Malaysia’s nation-building efforts and ensured the Indian community’s representation in government.

Our Aims and Objectives

The MIC is committed to:

Safeguarding and defending Malaysia’s independence and sovereignty.

Upholding and preserving the Constitution of Malaysia and the principles of Rukun Negara.

Promoting and protecting the political, economic, educational, cultural, and social interests of Indians in Malaysia.

Representing and expressing the legitimate aspirations of the Indian community.

Fostering inter-racial harmony and goodwill among all Malaysians.

Collaborating with organizations that share similar goals.

Advancing Malaysia’s progress in cooperation with other communities.

Our Vision for the Future

Guided by the spirit of unity and progress, the MIC continues to empower the Malaysian Indian community through education, economic development, and cultural preservation.
